Workshop Theme:

The ‘Writing for Publication Workshop’ was funded by the American Political Science Association and in collaboration with Cairo University. The workshop took place on 17-19 October 2016 with 10 participants from different Egyptian universities. As writing for academic journals is highly competitive and equally central to universities around the world, several universities across the Arab world are inciting their staff to publish in highly-regarded journal. The aim of this workshop was to make a small contribution to the development of scholarship in the Arab world by providing some guidance and support to early-career researchers in publishing their research. The workshop was designed to support participants in writing for academic publications, with a special focus on journal articles.

Aims and Objectives:

The main objectives of the workshop were to introduce participants to:

-          Fundamentals of academic writing with emphasis on clear presentation and structure (research question, literature review, methodology, etc.).

-          Writing abstracts, introductions, conclusions.

-          Exploring outlets for publication and selection of an appropriate outlet for their work.

-          Peer-review process, cover letters, responding to reviewers’ feedback, and dealing with rejections.

The workshop also included review and feedback sessions, where participants received feedback on their manuscripts in order to produce a final draft of a piece suitable for publication.

In a 3 day-program, the workshop combined training sessions and tutorials on the several processes of publishing in high-impact academic journals. On the first day, the first two sessions examined the writing stage process. Dr. Marcelo Olarreaga explored the main components of an article (research question, literature review, and methodology). The sessions also focused on the clarity of presentation and structure. Following the training sessions, participants had the opportunity to present their own research and receive feedback on their manuscripts.

The second day of the workshop examined the publication process. In the first two sessions, Dr. André Bank examined some of the most important components of a manuscript, namely abstract, introduction, and conclusion. The second part of the day was allocated to discussing and reviewing participants’ manuscripts. Participants were given detailed feedback on their manuscripts from the workshop leaders.

On the third day, Dr. André Bank explored the choice of the appropriate journal, the submission procedures, and the cover letter. It will also examine the different types of rejections. He also explored focus on how to deal with feedback and how to respond to reviewers’ comments. The sessions also included a discussion around samples of editors’ decisions and the feedback process.
